I guess when it comes to fire I;ve gotten lazy..it's safe to say I've reached the fat Elvis Period of fire making using mostly ferro or trad flint and steel... Time for going back to basics. I found some dead but very damp dwarf sumac today..decided to give give a bowdrill a go after a long...Long hiatus... had all the right elements good smoke good black dust but no coal today.. I'll get some pics up soon..so' here's my challenge for the month of April, I know we all work, so the challenge is 3 coals using a self made bowand drill a week for the month of April.. you can post pics successes and failures here. it's not a challenge, It;s not a competition it's just a chance to get motivated and learn a new skill, or get a better handle on an old one here's the area we where today Some long since hatched diamond back terrapin eggs the sumac set lots o dust and smoke no coal

So you know you've gotten real rust when you get to this point with no success

Great job John!! Thanks for the motivation my friend!!!! I am embarrassed to say how long it's been since I did that. But it's definitely time I got back on my game!

Like the rest of you, I hadn't done any friction fire for quite awhile, so, yesterday (in my living room), I whipped up 1 hand drill coal and 1 bow drill coal. Probably whip up another hand drill coal tonight (trying to recondition the hands).
