I used one for a long while when I first got into kit stuff. I think they are handy, and give way easier access. Unless you're disciplined and keep it very light (and your water on your hip) then they can start to dig into your shoulder after a few hundred paces.
I'll tell you where I still use them though, and that's as a 'possibles bag' when leaving my camp/main bag. A light sack for carrying a few essentials makes life easier.
My contents are usually... Compass Water tabs Bandanna Book for plant id Tarp /poncho Cordage Snack

I'm also interested in a new shoulder bag. Presently I use an old camera bag, it works well but it is just a tad small for carrying my Machax (Becker BK-4), my favourite knife, fully concealed to prevent the soccer moms from having to reach in their purses for their Valium.
Most shoulder bags, I have seen, require selling a kidney to afford them.
Looking forward to further discussion in this thread.

Some of the knock-off Maxpedition stuff makes for a decent rig in my opinion. Not traditional at all though, and you'd have to lash your knife to the exterior. That's what I used to do anyway. Other than that, I have taken basic canvas rucks and retrofitted a backpack shoulder pad onto it. This is one of my 'while strolling away from camp' haversacks. I made it from a pair of old pants. Complete with secondary zippered pocket haha

Very creative, Spooky. I like it, especially the zippered pocket.

LMAO, Wasn't I just holding it for you? I didn't want you to have to carry a bag and walk at the same time. I was just being polite..
